Creative Mother’s Day Ideas! // Sunray Sister

Good evening sisters! How has your weekend been? I have been busy at my part-time job, but I’ve also had¬†fun, and now I’ve got a few days off to focus on some Sunray Sister goals and personal projects too. What are your plans?

Next Sunday it is Mother’s Day! In my opinion celebrations like these are much more important than Easter and Christmas, as they encourage gratitude for special people in our lives.

So next week how will you show your mum you love her? A box of chocolates? A bunch of flowers? Come on, get creative! Here are my ideas…

  1. Cook a healthy meal for your mum, and do the dishes too!
  2. Go for a long countryside walk, and take some nice photos to remember the little moments.
  3. Give your mum a potted plant that will keep on growing.
  4. Write a poem listing all the lovely things about your mum!
  5. Draw or paint a picture of her. Or ask your favourite artist to do it for you, most artists love taking portrait commissions.
  6. Book a spa date! Self-love, care and relaxation are so important for our well-being.
  7. Buy some pretty beads and make a simple necklace, bracelet or pair of earrings.
  8. Take your mum to watch a film or performance.
  9. Bake some cute cupcakes or other tasty treats.
  10. Print some old photos and put them in a little handmade photo album to remember the good ol’ days!

What is the best thing about your mum?¬†How will you be spending mother’s day? Share your stories and ideas in the comments or find me on social media!

Coming up this week will be another YouTube video, followed by the very first edition of Love Lessons. This new post series will be starting with the subject of tea! In the meantime, remember to watch my latest YouTube video (below!) and subscribe to my channel.

I hope your week is filled with joy, love and success! I believe in you!

Peace and love,

DIY Embroidered Mini Purse // Sunray Sister Shows You How

Welcome back sisters! How is your week going so far? I’ve managed to get a cold again, and it’s raining outside… but otherwise I’ve been feeling positive, and getting productive; preparing for my first exhibition, reading lots of library books, working at my part-time job¬†and making content for my YouTube channel.

Speaking of YouTube, my second video is now live!!! This week’s video is another episode of ‘Sunray Sister Shows You How’, a craft tutorial teaching you how to make a mini embroidered drawstring purse. Hit play below, or go straight to my channel.

What do you think? What videos would you like to see in the future? I made a post recently about all my ideas, but let me know if you have some more ideas for me!

Coming up this Friday on the blog will be a new edition of my music playlist feature, Playtime. Enjoy the rest of the week!

Peace and love,

So now that we have covered what’s happened, let’s look at where the Sunray Sister blog is heading next…

From now on, my blog schedule will be as follows:

  • Fridays and Sundays – a fun or serious post about a subject I feel strongly about, a new topic I’ve been learning about, new creations and designs I’m working on, an upcoming event, a personal story, or a list of cool stuff (like great music¬†or books).
  • Last Friday of each month – ‘Happy Highlights‘, a short and sweet post showing gratitude for the things that made me smile during the last month.
  • Last Sunday of each month – a business/personal update and review of my goals. Plus a celebration of any milestones I reached.
  • Wednesdays – a YouTube video and brief written overview of the content. I shared a whole post about the type of videos I will be creating; you can expect craft tutorials, discussion on alternative living, sketchbook flip-throughs, adventures outside and more.

I will see you back here on Sunday for yet another special announcement, involving some new handmade creations and a few other artists!

Day 14: LAST DAY! BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! // Sunray Sister’s 14 Days of Self-Love

How are you sisters? I hope you are feeling super loved right now! Because you are brilliant and you deserve to be loved.

On this final day of 14 days of posts, I would like to share something SUPER special with you…

It’s here! Sunray Sister is all about positivity via creativity, so my channel is going to be all about leading a creative life by: making stuff, learning stuff and finding alternatives in order to love yourself, others and our planet as much as possible.

To make a paper heart bunting…

You will need

  • Newspaper to protect surface
  • Paper – I used 3 sheets of cold pressed watercolour paper
  • Paints – I used red, white and gold acrylics from WHSmith
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Shape template – I made a heart, aprox. 12cm square
  • A sewing machine and thread, OR
  • A hole punch and ribbon

  1. Prepare paint
  2. Paint paper and leave to dry
  3. Trace template onto back of painted paper
  4. Cut shapes
  5. Set up your sewing machine
  6. Sew shapes together on sewing machine, making sure you leave extra thread at either end for hanging up
  7. OR, if you don’t have a sewing machine, simply punch holes either side of each heart, and thread the hearts onto some thin ribbon.

Starting a YouTube channel is such a massive step for me, so it would mean the world if you could share my video on social media, tell your friends and let me know what you thought! Find me on social media!

After all those posts, I’m feeling¬†rather exhausted, but I have just hit 50 published blog posts! Wow! Thank you so much for being here, and following my journey, I love you all! See you on Friday for a round up¬†of all 14 days, in case you missed any.

Peace and love,

Rachel x

Day 7: Alternative Valentine’s Gifts // Sunray Sister’s 14 Days of Love

Hello again sisters. We’re halfway through my two week challenge!!! I’m having a lot of fun spreading all this love around. Here’s a little summary of the past six days:

Now to today’s post…

This Valentine’s, as well as a cute card for your loved one, you may be thinking of adding the standard flowers, chocolates and fancy gift. Well today, I’d like to show you some creative¬†alternatives!

Get healthy! Make super special smoothies. Take time for a traditional tea ceremony. If you still want a treat, make or buy sugar and dairy free alternatives. Heck even gluten free?! I am slowly, slowly realising the benefits of gradually cutting these things from my life. So why should the gifts we give and receive be any different? What is the point in a ‘treat’ if you are going to feel rubbish five minutes later? I am still¬†working this out for myself though, so just remember to always forgive yourself!

Plant seeds! Cut flowers are nice, but not that nice. I managed to save the flowers below about 4 years ago by drying them, and now they make a nice photo prop. But for a special gift try a potted plant instead. Or even seeds, which could represent nurturing and letting love grow! Everyone knows you don’t need a garden to enjoy plants and beautiful flowers; you can make room for them inside your house, or¬†outside your windows if you have window boxes or hanging baskets. If you do have a garden, you could buy a beautiful rose-bush or even a tree!

Expensive gift

Go independent and support small businesses! If you are brave enough make something yourself. Of course there are lots of options within this choice. It depends on what you feel capable making and what your loved one enjoys: it could be an abstract painting, a portrait, a mini photo album, a photo collage, some infused cooking oils, jam from berries collected on a walk, homemade moisturizer or lip balm, or even a poem.

If you are really brave, maybe just don’t get anything at all?¬†I believe in experience over possessions. But even when it comes to an experience such as a meal out, try to support small and¬†independent restaurants or pubs. Skip the chains. Also explore alternatives such as the obvious cooking something fancy at home, or taking a really long walk somewhere new. For these kind of things also consider creating a cute ‘voucher’ for a date, such as writing on some pretty¬†paper: “Meal for two at___, on ___, followed by a walk to ____. Love your Valentine”, or something similar!

These ideas can be applied to any occasion, not just Valentine’s. What alternative ideas do you have? Are there creative solutions which you already use? Let me know in the comments or via social media.

Tomorrow is day 8 of¬†Sunray Sister’s 14 Days of Love, and I will be bringing you¬†my¬†perspective on¬†when love is misused, and how we can restore balance.

Peace and extra love,

Rachel x

Day 6: Send a Handmade Card to your Valentine // Sunray Sister’s 14 Days of Love

Happy Monday sisters! It is the start of a brand new week, and a new chance to give yourself and others even more love than before.

So this Valentine’s, why not send a card to your loved one(s) to tell them how much you love them?! Just make sure it’s handmade;¬†by yourself or an awesome independent designer. The featured image above is a card by Re:made. Below¬†are a few more of my favourites for day 6 of Sunray Sister’s 14 Days of Love.

Simple and quirky, with a fun pun. What could be better?¬†Real Simple have lots of similar ideas on their website, including ‘we just fit’ with two jigsaw pieces!

Place is everything, so find a map of the location that is important to you and your loved ones, cut it into a heart and put it on a card. Just like Swoon Studio did.

Image from

Instead of maps, try cutting up¬†old books¬†and include your loved one’s name, like this card¬†from Re:made. An alternative colour combination is shown in the featured image at the top of the blog, which just happens to use my name!

For the more statistically minded, try a pie chart of your heart. This card by Connie Clementine can be personalised with your own text.

These notecards are super sweet and easy to make with this tutorial by Little Birdie Secrets. There are ideas for other shapes for other occasions as well.

Image from

Get stitching to show someone you really care with this DIY kit by Stitch Kits.

Artist Brittany Davies has some awesome anti-Valentine’s cards! Her drawings are incredible too.

Image from

For similar humorous yet beautifully designed cards, try Fiona Clabon’s clever collage¬†creations.

Image from

If you make your own cute card, why not try this heart envelope to put your creation into?!

One final recommendation, check out this book on the art of sending beautiful letters and cards by Michelle Mackintosh.

I hope that’s given you some cool ideas to spread some love this Valentine’s, and not just in a romantic way; send them to your friends and family too! Maybe even give some out to strangers!!!

Come back tomorrow for day 7 of¬†Sunray Sister’s 14 Days of Love, where I will be talking about handmade and alternative gifts to give at Valentine’s and all year round.

Peace and love,

Rachel x

Day 4: Thoughts of an Anxious Artist // Sunray Sister’s 14 Days of Love

Welcome back sisters! Today is the fourth day of my 14 Days of Love blogging challenge. I hope you are enjoying it so far!? If you missed any of the first three posts, you can find them all here.

Now, I have a confession for you all.

Last week, I promised an Etsy shop update today. But I haven’t been able to achieve this goal, for a few different reasons. Instead of creating some alternative content, I just wanted to write honestly about how I’m feeling and what my situation looks like at the moment.

The present…

I love to make cute things, and I love to share this love with others! I started my Etsy shop back in September 2016, and it has been a fun experience so far. I aim to bring you high quality handmade¬†items¬†that you will love, which¬†will hopefully make you love yourself, others and the planet a little more. And sometimes it takes me a bit longer than I think to make new products. Part of this is to do with not planning thoroughly, or considering things from a serious business viewpoint. So I’m still working things out!

I don’t make any money from Sunray Sister. Yet I have to pay rent and bills, so for now I¬†have to work at a ‘normal’ job. I recently started a new position, with lots of extra hours. This¬†is fantastic, but also means that I get home from work and continue work at home for my business, and then go to work again the next morning. At the moment I have been focusing on building my brand online, which hasn’t left much time for sewing. (Although I did launch my first giveaway with three new handmade creations, which I am really proud of!) Additionally I recently finished a Prince’s Trust course and need to start work on my business plan. It also happens to be a special someone’s birthday tomorrow. Oh, and I managed to get a cold!¬†

So a few things hit me all at once this week, and a few things will have to wait. I set myself this daily blogging challenge and I really want to complete it. I really want to get to the heart of what Sunray Sister needs to be about. And I can do that through writing and sharing my ideas with you on this blog. I also really need to look after myself better; basic things like sleep, hydration and exercise often get forgotten. Self-care should never have to wait.

The future…?

I have a small feeling that Sunray Sister will eventually be less about selling handmade products, and more about providing a service for promoting self-love, positivity and improved well-being.

Essentially I want to spread a message of experience over possessions. I am reading more and more about the benefits of minimalism, reusing and repairing belongings, living simply, connecting with nature and using natural products, being kinder to other creatures and to the environment.

These are just some thoughts of an anxious artist trying to figure out what’s right, what’s true; where there is clarity and alignment¬†in order to become less anxious.¬†I will continue my research and get back to you!

What are your thoughts? What is your impression of my brand? Where do you think I could take this business in the future? As always I have endless ideas, and am constantly seeking balance, simplicity and clarity. I know I will find it within myself eventually, and I look forward to sharing more of this journey of self-discovery with you soon.

Tomorrow join me for day 5 of¬†Sunray Sister’s 14 Days of Love, where we will be celebrating the¬†birthday of the most awesome man in the whole universes!

Peace and love,

Rachel x

New Handmade Creations Coming Soon // Sunray Sister

Welcome back sisters! Here is a quick look at some of my recent¬†design ideas.¬†These will be transforming into beautiful new handmade creations for my next¬†Etsy shop¬†update on Saturday 4th of February,¬†just in time for Valentine’s Day.

And remember, you can’t love anyone else, until you accept and love yourself. So this Valentine’s make sure¬†to make time for you!

Hoops and cards – coming soon!

Classic embroidery hoops with a sweet or motivational message. Using, of course, my hand-dyed fabric. These can be hung up in your home to bring a smile to your face every day!

You may have seen my illustrated Christmas cards last year, but one of my 2017 business goals stated that I need to stick to textile products only, in order to establish a clear brand. So I am creating some embroidered cards to send to your loved ones!

Simple fabric bookmarks, with options to personalise with your, or your loved one’s, initials. They will make you want to pick up that book and get reading!

These will be similar to my square brooches, but on a keyring instead!

Zip pouches

Useful and cute, what could be better!? These pouches can be used for anything from stationary to make-up, or just whatever you like.

More square brooches made with sturdy kilt pins. Find some in my shop now!

Bookmarks, keyrings, pouches and brooches – coming soon!

So keep your eyes out for these new products coming to the shop this February!

See you back here this Sunday for a HUGE announcement, bringing together lots of things that I’ve been hinting at recently. I am going to share my big plan with you all! See you then sisters.

Peace and even more love than before,

Rachel x
